Scalloped Potatoes Ingredients
- 2 lbs (900 g) Yukon gold or russet potatoes, thinly sliced
- 2 tbsp butter
- 2 cloves garlic, minced
- 2 tbsp all-purpose flour
- 1 ½ cups whole milk (or half-and-half for extra creaminess)
- 1 cup shredded cheddar cheese
- 1/2 cup grated Parmesan cheese
- Salt and pepper to taste
- Fresh thyme or parsley for garnish (optional)
Instructions
- Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C). Grease a 9×13-inch baking dish.
- Make the sauce: In a saucepan over medium heat, melt butter. Add garlic and sauté for 30 seconds. Stir in flour and cook for 1 minute to form a roux.
- Add milk slowly, whisking constantly until smooth. Cook until slightly thickened (about 3–4 minutes)
- Stir in cheeses, reserving a bit of Parmesan for topping. Season with salt and pepper. Stir until cheese is melted and sauce is smooth.
- Layer the potatoes: Arrange half of the potato slices in the dish. Pour half of the cheese sauce over them. Repeat with remaining potatoes and sauce.
- Top with reserved Parmesan and cover with foil.
- Bake for 40 minutes, then remove foil and bake an additional 20 minutes until golden and bubbly.
- Cool slightly, garnish with herbs if desired, and serve warm.
