History of Burritos
The burrito, a staple of Mexican cuisine, has a rich and fascinating history. Its origins trace back to Mesoamerican times when indigenous peoples used tortillas to wrap and transport food. While the modern burrito as we know it today is most associated with northern Mexico, the concept of wrapping food in a flatbread is centuries old.
The name “burrito,” which means “little donkey” in Spanish, is thought to derive from how the tortilla wraps resemble a donkey’s pack. Some speculate that it was named after donkeys because they were commonly used to carry supplies, including food wrapped in tortillas, making burritos a practical, portable meal.
The burrito became popular in the northern regions of Mexico, particularly in the state of Chihuahua, where simple fillings like beans, meat, or cheese were wrapped in large flour tortillas. Over time, this practical dish crossed the border into the United States, where it gained widespread popularity. In the 20th century, the burrito evolved further in the U.S., particularly in California and Texas, where ingredients like rice, guacamole, sour cream, and various meats were added, giving rise to variations like the “Mission-style” burrito.
Today, burritos have become a versatile and globally loved dish, with countless variations to suit different tastes and dietary preferences, including Paleo Breakfast Burrito!
